Nigerian singer, Ayra Starr, has sparked fresh waves in the ongoing “jollof war” by reportedly  revealing her preference for Ghanaian jollof rice over its Nigerian counterpart.

The revelation has added fuel to the long-standing debate on social media about which West African country makes the best jollof rice, with fans from both Ghana and Nigeria passionately defending their favorites.

During a recent appearance on BET Amplified, Ayra Starr shared her thoughts on the two popular versions of the dish, praising Ghanaian jollof for its unique garnishing. While expressing love for both, she noted the distinct cultural differences between the two.

“Ghanaian jollof. I mean, they are both really amazing. I grew up with Nigerian jollof rice. It’s usually cooked in a big pot outside, which gives it that smoky flavour,” she said.

“That’s what makes it ‘smoky jollof rice.’ In contrast, Ghanaian jollof rice incorporates more ingredients, while Nigerian jollof typically keeps the protein and vegetables separate. So, it’s really two different vibes.”

Ayra Starr’s comments have reignited the friendly rivalry between fans of Ghanaian and Nigerian jollof rice, with each side continuing to claim superiority in the never-ending jollof debate.
