The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has come under scrutiny over its recent strike action, with some questioning the motives behind the move.
Maradona Yeboah Adjei, President-elect of the University of Ghana’s Students Representative Council (SRC), has joined the chorus of critics, suggesting that UTAG’s actions smack of partisan interests and hypocrisy.
According to Adjei, popularly known as Guru NKZ, the timing of the strike is suspicious, coming just a month before the elections. “Have UTAG not seen galamsey activities going on in the country for so long, and just a month to elections, they want to go on strike?” he asked in an interview with Amansan Krakye on Cape Coast’s Property FM.
Guru NKZ believes that UTAG’s leadership should be investigated to determine their political party affiliation, as their actions may be driven by partisan interests rather than a genuine concern for the galamsey issue.
“We need to ask and find out what the political party the UTAG president is affiliated to,” he stated.
The Galamsey Conundrum
Galamsey, or illegal mining, has been a persistent problem in Ghana, with devastating environmental and social consequences.
While UTAG’s strike action may be seen as a bold move to address the issue, some critics argue that it is politically motivated stunt.
The University of Ghana students have also shared their reactions to the potential strike, with some expressing concerns about the impact on their academic activities.
Others have questioned the effectiveness of the strike in addressing the galamsey issue.
