Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye
A brewing controversy has emerged regarding the naming of a newly constructed hospital situated on a land donated by the Awukugua community.
In a strongly worded letter addressed to the Minister of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, Osabarima Opese Konadu I, the Awukuguahene, expressed dissatisfaction with plans to name the hospital after a neighbouring town, Adukrom.
The hospital, built on land purchased from Awukugua and subsequently donated to the Ministry of Health, is reportedly nearing completion.
However, the chief and the local community are demanding that the facility bear the name of Awukugua, to honour their heritage and contribution.
In the letter dated November 21, 2024, the chief stated, “As the original landowner, I had expected that the hospital would bear the name of Awukugua where the land is situated. This is essential for preserving the town’s identity and heritage.”
“I request that the Ministry of Health takes immediate action to amend the hospital’s name to reflect Awukugua; ensure all official documents, signage, and communications reflect the corrected name,” Osabarima Konadu urged.
The chief warned that failure to address these concerns would lead to the revocation of the land donation and the refusal of the community to participate in the hospital’s commissioning ceremony.
Meanwhile, local leaders and residents are rallying behind their chief, emphasising the need for the hospital to carry the town’s name as a testament to Awukugua’s role in advancing healthcare in the Okere District.
