Dorcas Affo-Toffey
The last general election held about a week ago saw five female Parliamentary Candidates (PCs) in the Western Region winning their various constituencies
They will therefore be representing their constituents in the country’s next legislative assembly.
This is an improvement on the previous one female parliamentarian the region had prior to the last general election.
The current female MPs elect, who are all members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), include Dorcas Affo-Toffey, MP elect for Jomoro and Grace Ayensu Danquah, MP elect for Essikado-Ketan.
The rest are Mavis Bissue, MP elect for Ahanta West, Emelia Arthur, MP elect for Shama and Joana Gyan Cudjoe, MP elect for Amenfi Central.
Prior to this year’s election, Dorcas Affo-Toffey was the only female parliamentarian in the Region.
In this year’s elections, Dorcas Affo Toffey won with 25,349 votes to defeat her main contender and the NPP candidate, Paul Essien who had14,195 votes.
For the first time in over 20 years, the NDC has been able to win the Essikado-Ketan Constituency.
Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah of the NDC polled 26,166 votes to defeat the NPP’s Charles Bissue who had17, 754 votes.
The NDC’s candidate for Shama, Emelia Arthur also defeated the NPP’s candidate, Isaac Kwamena Afful. Emelia poled 23,043 votes as against that of Mr. Afful who had 17,082Â votes.
