Galamsey Unlimited

The Law of Karma we pointed out in a previous commentary is real and applying verifiably on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its leadership.

They organised demonstrations on the streets of Accra, the organisers of such protest marches hiring men and women to join their ranks ostensibly against illegal mining or galamsey.

The reality was that they were demonstrating against their long stay in opposition and not illegal mining.

As for the source of funding for their politically motivated street shows, your guess is as good as ours.

They made it look like the then government of President Akufo-Addo was knee-deep in galamsey as a means of attracting public opprobrium for the government, which worked for them.

There will always be consequences of actions which are steeped in diabolism.

The plot using galamsey was so carefully choreographed that muddy water in bottles were presented as offshoots of illegal mining. These were displayed on selected streets of Accra for mischievous effects and given mileage on NDC-friendly media outlets.

Today, as fate would have it, the NDC is at the throttles of state with an overwhelming numbers in Parliament and therefore with the authority to easily pass legislations and even declare a state of emergency as means of thwarting galamsey.

Unfolding developments point to the fact that, the government does not have the political will to clamp down on illegal mining.

The state of emergency which they demanded of President Akufo-Addo to declare close to elections of last year is at their disposal as galamsey takes an unprecedented high.

Credible information has it that foreigners who were brought in from the Sahelian countries to cause civil strife had the NDC not won the polls are now working on galamsey sites where they provide security for the illegal miners.

Members of Parliament (MPs) and former parliamentary candidates have been fingered in such land degrading occupations yet those who led the pre-election demonstrations are silent.

The NDC activists and their cohorts in some civil society organisations (CSOs) are silent, their eyes looking elsewhere for the spoils of the elections, not galamsey and its devastating effects on the environment.

The level of hypocrisy in this country is scary. Where are the clergy, the imams, and CSOs as our water bodies and now our forests are suffering unprecedented degradation.

Reports of arrested Chinese nationals engaged in galamsey being released upon orders from above make us convinced that illegal mining is being done with the tacit approval wielding political authority.  That is how bad the situation has degenerated since the NDC assumed the reins of power.

For how long shall we allow the degradation of our environment and water bodies to continue?

The mercury and other metals finding their way into the guts of fishes in water bodies pose danger to the health of human beings.

We demand of personalities of influence in society to rise against not only galamsey but the hypocrisy being exhibited by those silent voices must be heard now.
