At least 13 people are feared dead, and several others have sustained severe injuries following a fatal accident at Amanase Estate Junction in the Eastern Region on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
The accident involved a fuel tanker with registration number GR 1300-16 and a Sprinter bus with registration number GW 6510-23. Both vehicles were traveling in opposite directions at the time of the crash.
Narrating the incident, Suhum Municipal Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service, ADO1 Daniel Akonnor Opare Ohene, explained that the fuel tanker, which was headed towards Accra, reportedly veered off its lane and collided head-on with the oncoming Sprinter bus en route to Kumasi.
Ohene Daniel confirmed the number of casualties, adding that some passengers were trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated by emergency responders.
In an interview, the tanker driver’s mate revealed that he had fallen asleep during the journey and woke up to find that the vehicle had crossed into the opposite lane, moments before the impact.
The injured are currently receiving treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital’s morgue.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
