Balthazar Faces 18-Years Imprisonment If Guilty

The Former Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), Balthazar Ebang Engonga, is on trial for corruption charges after spending 10 months in Black Beach Prison. Prosecutors accuse him of embezzling millions in public funds between 2015 and 2020.

The charges include, Embezzlement (8 years), Illicit enrichment (4 years, 5 months) and Abuse of office (6 years, 1 day)
If convicted, Balthazar faces nearly 18 years in prison, a fine exceeding $1.5 million, and a ban from holding public office. Other high-profile individuals are also on trial, accused of forming a complex corruption network within state institutions.

Balthazar’s defense team claims the charges are politically motivated, citing weak evidence and timing linked to a previous sextape controversy. The trial continues, with a verdict expected soon.
