Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu
THE CHIEF of Adanse Dompoase near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu, has reportedly been shot under bizarre circumstances at a funeral in Obuasi.
The traditional leader was said to be exchanging pleasantries with other mourners at the funeral rites of the late mother of the Obuasi West (MCE), Madam Faustilove Kannin, when calamity suddenly struck.
A bullet surprisingly passed through the servants of the Adanse Dompoasehene before hitting Nana Kwabena Bonsu, who had just arrived at the funeral grounds in Obuasi on Saturday, November 29, 2025.
Nana Kwabena Bonsu, reportedly, fell to the ground before he was carried into a waiting vehicle, which rushed him to the Obuasi Government Hospital, where he was treated and admitted by medical personnel.
Considering the way the chief was hit by the bullet, there were initial reports that perhaps the Adanse Dompoase chief was a target of assassination, which sparked fears among other mourners present.
But it was later revealed that the Adanse Dompoasehene was hit by a stray bullet, reportedly fired by one Nana Yaw Dankwa, a musketeer of another traditional leader at the funeral grounds.
The shooter, who is believed to be 30 years old, was said to have fired the musket to announce the presence of his chief at the funeral grounds, but the bullet unfortunately struck Nana Kwabena Bonsu.
The suspect was reportedly beaten mercilessly by some irate mourners at the scene, who had accompanied the Adanse Dompoase chief to the funerals grounds, before he was rescued by the police.
The suspect was still in police custody in Obuasi when this report was being filed on Sunday evening. It looks likely that the security agencies would definitely process him for court this week.
REGSEC Confirms Shooting
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) Head, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has also confirmed the Adanse Dompoasehene’s shooting incident in a Facebook post, and wished the chief speedy recovery.
He wrote, “The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council has received a briefing on an incident that occurred on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at a funeral in Obuasi, where a firearm was discharged, resulting in injuries to Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu, Adanse Dompoasehene.
“The police intervened promptly and arrested the suspect, a 30-year-old Nana Yaw Dankwa, who is currently in custody assisting with ongoing investigations,” adding that “The victim received medical care and has been discharged home.”
Dr. Amoakohene, who is the Ashanti Regional Minister, called for calm, assuring that the security agencies in the region would properly handle the shooting incident, noting that security in the region is intact.
“The public is encouraged to remain calm and to cooperate with the security agencies as they undertake their duties. The Council reaffirms its commitment to preserving peace, enhancing safety and upholding the rule of law across the region,” he added.
