President John Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has approved the removal of the 1% COVID-19 Levy on goods, services and imports.
The levy’s abolishment begins next year, January 2026, as the repeal was signed by President Mahama on December 10, 2025.
The abolishment comes after parliamentary approval last month as part of the government’s effort to remove taxes and ease the cost of living for households and businesses in the country.
The COVID-19 Levy was introduced in 2021 under the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy Act (Act 1068), and was signed into law on March 31, 2021, as part of the country’s pandemic recovery measures.
The levy was designed to support government efforts in restoring health systems, finance COVID-19 expenditures, and rebuild fiscal buffers.
The Act imposed a 1% levy on the value of taxable goods and services in the country, as well as on imports, excluding items exempt under Value Added Tax (VAT) regulations.
