The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has congratulated the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, on her election as Chair of the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), describing the development as a major endorsement of Ghana’s growing influence in global higher education governance.
In a congratulatory statement issued yesterday and signed by Dr. Lawrence Kwarteng-Ashia,
Deputy Director of Media Relations for Parliamentary Service, the Speaker said her elevation to the prestigious position was a testament to her “stellar leadership in higher education governance” and her strong international standing as a distinguished academic with over two decades of experience.
“Your assumption of this high office bears testimony to your stellar leadership in higher education governance, and your enviable international credentials as a celebrated academic,” Speaker Bagbin stated.
Prof. Amfo’s election follows her induction in August 2024 as one of eight members of the Governing Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
According to the Speaker, her subsequent elevation to chair the Council underscores the confidence the global academic community reposes in her leadership, vision and depth of experience.
Speaker Bagbin said the Parliament of Ghana takes immense pride in Prof. Amfo’s achievement, noting that her rise to such a high international office reflects positively on the country’s higher education sector and academic leadership.
He expressed confidence that, under her chairmanship, the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities would be effectively steered towards achieving its core objective of positioning higher education as a key driver of sustainable development and societal transformation across member states.
The Speaker further pledged the solidarity and full support of Parliament to Prof. Amfo, expressing optimism that she would excel in her new role and leave a lasting impact on the Association during her tenure.
“I have absolute confidence in your ability to excel as Chairperson of the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities,” he said, adding that Parliament stands ready to support her efforts to ensure a successful tenure.
Prof. Amfo’s election was officially announced by the Head Office of the Association of Commonwealth Universities in London on January 8, 2026.
In her new role, she is expected to provide strategic leadership and direction to the Association’s governance structures, working with member institutions across the Commonwealth to advance academic collaboration, innovation and development.
The Association of Commonwealth Universities is one of the world’s oldest and most respected international university networks, bringing together higher education institutions from across the Commonwealth to promote excellence in teaching, research and societal impact.
