Mercy Johnson and Angela Okorie
Nollywood actress, Angela Okorie, has been granted ₦5 million bail by a Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations of cyberbullying fellow actress, Mercy Johnson-Okojie.
Justice Emeka Nwite, in ruling on Angela’s bail application filed by her lawyer, Earnest Nwoye, noted that while the prosecution opposed the request, there was no concrete evidence suggesting that Angela Okorie would abscond if granted bail.
“Therefore, I am minded to grant the bail in the interest of justice,” Justice Nwite said, stressing that the discretion to grant bail must be exercised judiciously.
Angela Okorie was admitted to bail with one surety of the same sum. The surety is required to be a Level 13 civil servant, submit an affidavit of means, and provide proof of appointment and last promotion. Both Angela Okorie and her surety must also submit two passport photographs, while the registrar is tasked with verifying the surety’s residence.
The judge adjourned the case until March 23 for trial but ordered that Angela be remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre until all bail conditions are perfected.
The development comes amid growing public attention to cases involving social media conduct and the legal responsibilities of public figures in Nigeria.
