Ayew’s Penalty Miss Caps Miserable Afternoon For Leicester

Jordan Ayew

Jordan Ayew endured one of the toughest moments of his career on Saturday as Leicester City slipped to a 2–0 home defeat against Charlton Athletic, a match that combined collective frustration with an unwanted personal milestone for the Ghana captain.

The Foxes’ hopes of a comeback were dashed in the second half when Ayew missed a penalty in the 56th minute — the first spot-kick failure of his professional club career. It proved a defining moment in a game already slipping away from the hosts.

Leicester, trailing by two goals, had been handed a lifeline shortly after the restart thanks to a flash of brilliance from Abdul Fatawu Issahaku.

The Ghanaian winger surged past several Charlton defenders with a dazzling run before being brought down inside the penalty area.

With the King Power Stadium urging him on, Ayew stepped up, sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, but watched in disbelief as his effort struck the post and bounced clear, preserving Charlton’s advantage.

The uphill task facing Leicester had begun much earlier. Just 15 minutes into the contest, defender Caleb Okoli was shown a straight red card, reducing the hosts to ten men for the majority of the match. Charlton quickly capitalised on their numerical superiority.

Sonny Carey opened the scoring in the 36th minute, converting from close range after Leicester failed to deal with sustained pressure. The visitors tightened their grip on the game moments before half-time when Lyndon Dykes doubled the lead, leaving the Foxes with a daunting challenge after the break.

Despite Leicester’s efforts, the missed penalty drained belief from the home side. Ayew’s frustrating afternoon came to an end late on when he was substituted for Zambian forward Patson Daka, as Charlton comfortably saw out the contest to claim all three points.
