The medical team during the screening exercise
The Medical Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), led by Dr. Abena Tannor, has organised a free breast and cervical cancer screening exercise for female footballers and match officials in Kumasi as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare support within women’s football.
The outreach programme, held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, was conducted in partnership with the Medical Women Association of Ghana (MWAG) and Hope Xchange Medical Centre. A total of 77 participants benefited from the exercise.
The screening focused primarily on Division One female footballers under the Ashanti Regional Football Association, with players drawn from eight clubs. Several female match officials and referees also took part in the health initiative.
Beyond the medical examinations, participants attended an educational session on breast and cervical cancer awareness.
Health professionals provided detailed guidance on early detection, risk factors, and the value of regular preventive check-ups.
The session was designed to equip the athletes with practical knowledge to help them take proactive decisions about their health.
Organisers say the programme forms part of a broader strategy to embed structured healthcare support within women’s football by delivering essential services directly to players in a convenient and supportive setting.
The initiative also underscores the GFA Medical Committee’s continued collaboration with regional football bodies, clubs, and medical partners to expand access to quality healthcare for female athletes and safeguard their wellbeing both on and off the pitch.
