KBTH Interdicts 2 Doctors, 2 Nurses Over Hit-And-Run Case

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has interdicted two doctors and two nurses over their alleged failure to provide emergency treatment to a hit-and-run victim who later died.

The decision was announced in a statement issued by management on Monday, February 23, 2026, following widespread public concern about the circumstances that led to the patient’s death. The hospital indicated that an internal committee has been constituted to investigate the incident as well as determine the facts surrounding the actions of the medical personnel involved.

Management stated that all persons connected to the case have been directed to cooperate fully with the committee to ensure a fair, thorough and transparent investigation. The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and quality healthcare delivery, assuring the public that further updates would be communicated after the probe is concluded.

The deceased, 29-year-old Charles Amissah, an engineer with Promasidor Ghana Limited, sustained severe shoulder injuries in a hit-and-run accident at the Circle Overpass in Accra on February 6, 2026. Emergency Medical Services personnel reportedly stabilised him at the scene and prepared him for transfer to a health facility.

Amissah was allegedly turned away by three major hospitals; Ghana Police Hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hospital, and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital due to a lack of available beds. Attempts to transfer him elsewhere were reportedly declined despite warnings from the ambulance team that moving him again could be life-threatening.

While still at Korle Bu, Amissah went into cardiac arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was administered but proved unsuccessful, as he was later pronounced dead. His body was later taken to the mortuary.
