The seized contraband
The Ghana Police Service in the Oti Region has uncovered a large consignment of suspected cannabis valued at over GH¢1.4 million in an impounded truck following a court-approved inspection.
A press statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police John Nchor, of the Oti Regional Public Affairs Unit, stated that the suspected narcotics were discovered in a Volvo truck with registration number GC 3522-09, which was intercepted late last year at the Bonakye checkpoint.
The Ghana Police Service said the vehicle was stopped on December 29, 2025, while heading towards Kpassa, based on intelligence that it was transporting illegal goods. Upon interception, the driver and one other occupant reportedly fled the scene, abandoning the truck with the ignition key.
Following a court order granted on February 24, 2026, by the Jasikan Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour Lambert Y. Kerieba, security personnel opened the vehicle at Nkwanta in the presence of representatives from various state security agencies and members of the media.
Agencies present during the exercise included the Police, Military, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), Defence Intelligence, the Ghana National Fire Service, and the Narcotics Control Commission in Jasikan.
A thorough search of the truck revealed 320 cartons of bottled mineral water concealing 91 bales of suspected cannabis. The substances were packaged into 7,173 slabs, with an estimated street value exceeding GH¢1.4 million.
The exhibits have since been retained to support ongoing investigations.
The Regional Police Command assured the public of their continued resolve to combat drug trafficking and related criminal activities in the region. They further urged residents to volunteer credible information to assist security agencies in the prevention and detection of crime.
