Akrofuom SHTS To Get Four-Storey Boys’ Dormitory

Joseph Azumah cutting the sod for commencement of the project

THE MEMBER of Parliament (MP) for the Adansi Akrofuom Constituency, Joseph Azumah, has cut sod for the construction of a four-storey boys’ dormitory block at the Akrofuom Senior High Technical School (SHTS) to address the school’s accommodation challenges.

The project forms part of efforts by the MP to improve infrastructure at the school, which has been struggling with inadequate boarding facilities due to the increasing number of students.

According to Mr. Azumah, the modern dormitory facility will include housemaster’s quarters on each floor, a spacious ironing room, washing areas, washrooms and other essential amenities to ensure a comfortable stay for students. The project is expected to be completed within 18 months.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, Mr. Azumah expressed concern about the poor state of the existing dormitories, describing the situation as unacceptable.

“The situation in the school is very worrying, especially when it comes to accommodation. What we have here can best be described as prison-type accommodation, and that is not the kind of environment our students should be living in,” he stated.

He added that the dormitory project is only one of several initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure in the school.

Currently, due to the lack of adequate dormitory facilities, some students are compelled to sleep in an uncompleted building while attending classes, raising concerns about their safety and welfare.

The Headmaster of the school, Osei Owusu, expressed appreciation to the MP for the intervention, describing the project as timely.

He noted that the school is facing a serious infrastructural deficit as enrolment continues to increase while existing facilities remain inadequate and in poor condition.

Mr. Azumah also disclosed that since assuming office as Member of Parliament, he has committed about 70 percent of his Common Fund and personal benefits towards the development of education in the constituency.

The sod-cutting ceremony was attended by the District Chief Executive, traditional authorities, teachers, students and members of the community who gathered to witness the commencement of the project.
