Veteran Nollywood actress, Victoria Inyama, has revealed that she underwent female genital mutilation (FGM) as a child, describing the experience as both traumatic and, in her view, influential in shaping aspects of her adult life.
The actress disclosed during an Instagram Live session with Nigerian media personality, Daddy Freeze, where the discussion focused on FGM, a practice widely condemned by global health organisations.
Speaking during the session, Victoria Inyama said she was circumcised at the age of five while living with her grandmother in a village. She acknowledged the trauma associated with the procedure but also claimed it has helped her manage her sexual urges in adulthood.
“FGM is evil. You now have to deal with the consequences,” she said. “I was circumcised because I grew up with my grandmother in the village. That’s the best thing that they did for me because it is helping me a lot.”
She added that the experience has influenced her personal choices, stating that it has given her a level of control over her relationships.
FGM, often referred to as circumcision, is internationally recognised as a harmful practice and a violation of human rights, with medical experts warning of its physical and psychological effects.
