Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) has appointed Bernice Asabea Kissi Boateng as Group Head of Personal and Business Banking, a move aimed at accelerating its transformation agenda and strengthening its position within Ghana’s competitive financial services sector.

The appointment is in line with the bank’s continued push to attract top-tier talent as it works towards becoming a more customer-focused, relationship-driven institution.

In her new role, Ms. Kissi Boateng will provide executive oversight for UMB’s Commercial, SME, Consumer and Prominence Banking segments, areas identified as critical to growth.

She is expected to drive market expansion, deepen customer engagement and deliver tailored financial solutions across diverse client segments.

With more than 20 years of experience in corporate, commercial and investment banking, she brings a strong record of execution and strategic leadership.

Her career has been marked by balance sheet growth, the structuring of complex trade and finance deals, and the management of high-value client portfolios across multiple industries.

Before joining UMB, she held senior roles at Access Bank Ghana, serving as Sector Head for Corporate Banking and Head of Financial Institutions within the investment banking division.

In these roles, she contributed significantly to business expansion and transaction origination.

Her earlier professional experience includes positions at GCB Bank, Bank of Baroda Ghana, and Intercontinental Bank Ghana, where she built expertise in operations, treasury and customer service.

An alumna of St. Rose’s Senior High School, Akwatia, she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences and a Commonwealth Executive MBA from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), alongside extensive professional training in credit, strategy and financial management.

Managing Director of UMB, Philip Oti-Mensah, described the appointment as part of a deliberate effort to build a high-performing leadership team capable of delivering growth and innovation.

He noted that Ms. Bernice Boateng brings the leadership depth and commercial insight needed to scale the bank’s Personal and Business Banking operations and enhance customer experience.

The move forms part of a broader leadership restructuring strategy at UMB, as the bank intensifies efforts to improve service delivery, expand market share and position itself as a leading destination for banking talent in Ghana.
