Major Onshore Exploration Set To Commence

An onshore exploration

The first onshore petroleum exploration in large scale is set to start in the Voltaian basin.

Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) sources indicate that the exercise will span 100,000+ sq km bigger than all offshore blocks in Ghana combined. GNPC says it could be Ghana’s next big thing in oil and gas.

The Voltaian Basin in the Northern sector covers 460 communities across 13 districts, 10 in Northern Region and 3 in Savannah Region. This is Ghana’s next major hydrocarbon frontier, it has been said.

The specific districts in the North where GNPC Explorco is set to drill are Yendi Municipal, Mion District, Zabzugu District, Tatale-Sanguli District, Nanumba North Municipal and the Nanumba South District.

The rest are the Saboba District, Chereponi District, Gushiegu Municipal and the Karaga District.

For the Savannah Region are the East Gonja Municipal, North East Gonja District and the Central Gonja District.

GNPC Explorco, the exploration subsidiary of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, completed their aerial survey on March 18, 2026.

Stakeholders, especially traditional authorities, are anxious to know the results from the exploration.
