Controversial Nigerian singer, Portable, says many celebrities are afraid to speak publicly about insecurity and hardship in Nigeria because they fear being targeted by the authorities.
The singer made the comments while responding to British-Nigerian rapper Skepta’s call for Nigerian celebrities to speak up about the country’s challenges.
According to Portable, celebrities living in Nigeria face risks if they openly criticise the government.
“If we speak up, they will arrest us,” he said in a video shared online.
Portable said Nigerians living abroad are in a better position to comment on issues in the country because they are outside the reach of the authorities.
“Nigerians in the diaspora should speak up because the Nigerian government can’t arrest them from abroad,” he stated.
He added that many celebrities care about what is happening in the country but choose to remain silent out of fear.
“It is not like celebrities don’t care about Nigeria, but if we speak, they will persecute us,” Portable said.
