Asantehemaa Picks Nana Yaa Akyaa II As Stool Name

Nana Yaa Akyaa II

THE NEWLY enstooled Asantehemaa, known in private life as Nana Ama Bonsu, has officially picked Nana Yaa Akyaa II as her traditional stool name.

This came to light when Nana Yaa Akyaa II sat in state for the first time as Asantehemaa at the Manhyia Palace on Tuesday morning, just 24 hours after her official enstoolment.

According to sources at the Manhyia Palace, the new Asantehemaa, per Asante traditions, performed some rituals in the stool house on Monday evening.

They disclosed that it was during the performance of the sacred rituals in the stool house that the Asantehemaa chose Nana Yaa Akyaa II as her stool name.

Meanwhile, scores of chiefs, people, and institutions in Kumasi on Tuesday morning trooped to the Asantehemaa’s palace at Manhyia to congratulate Nana Yaa Akyaa II.

Nana Yaa Akyaa II, who was dressed in white cloth, which is an indication of joy, was surrounded by her numerous servants and courtiers at the Manhyia palace.

Beaming with smiles, the 15th Asantehemaa was seen exchanging pleasantries with some of the few lucky people who had the opportunity to shake hands with her.

The historic occasion was characterised by the singing of traditional Asante tunes and dancing to entertain Nana Yaa Akyaa II, who clearly enjoyed the spectacle.

As a reminder, His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, announced Nana Yaa Akyaa II as the 15th Asantehemaa on Monday, amid pomp and pageantry.

The new Asante Queen replaces her predecessor, Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III, who unfortunately kicked the bucket in August 2025.
