Comedian, Lekzy DeComic, has criticised the current government for what he describes as inadequate support for comedians and the wider creative industry.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Showbiz Roundtable, Lekzy compared the current administration’s approach to the creative sector with that of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
According to him, the previous administration became more supportive of comedy after he raised concerns about the genre’s limited attention.
Lekzy said his complaint to an NPP executive eventually led to the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) becoming more responsive to comedy organisers, with officials reaching out to explore ways of supporting shows.
He also recalled occasions when Ghanaian comedians received assistance to travel to the United States for Ghana Week celebrations in Washington, DC.
However, Lekzy said his experience with the current administration has been disappointing.
He cited an instance involving a comedy show he organised featuring two South African comedians. He said although the South African ambassador expressed willingness to support the event, subsequent discussions with representatives of the Blackstar Experience did not result in any tangible assistance.
Lekzy said he was particularly disappointed after being asked to provide footage from the event for a proposed collaboration between Ghana and South Africa, but received no further communication after the initial discussions.
He argued that such an initiative would have received more concrete backing under the previous government.
The comedian also questioned why the current administration, despite appointing several people from the creative industry to key positions, had not done more to support creatives.
Lekzy said he, therefore, agreed with comedian Kojo Preko Dankwah’s assessment of the government’s performance, which he reportedly rated at zero per cent.
