The Ho Municipal Assembly and the High Commission of Namibia are exploring opportunities for cooperation in agriculture, waste management, investment, trade and local economic development as part of efforts to deepen South-South cooperation between Ghana and Namibia.
The initiative emerged when the Namibian High Commissioner to Ghana, Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata, paid a familiarisation visit to the Ho Municipality in the Volta Region on Monday, August 17, 2026.
Receiving the Namibian delegation, the Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Stephen Adom, expressed the Assembly’s readiness to establish a mutually beneficial partnership with a municipality or city in Namibia. He said the proposed collaboration should focus on sharing knowledge, expertise and resources rather than merely seeking financial assistance.
Mr. Adom said Ho, as an agrarian municipality, had significant potential for agricultural cooperation, particularly in livestock and related value chains. He expressed interest in learning from Namibia’s livestock industry, especially its beef production, while proposing reciprocal visits involving municipal officials, farmers, businesses and other stakeholders.
He also said the municipality had considerable land resources that could provide opportunities for Namibian investors and farmers interested in establishing businesses in Ho. He assured prospective investors that the Assembly would facilitate land acquisition and other necessary processes to create a conducive environment for investment and job creation.
Waste management and environmental sanitation were also identified as key areas for collaboration. Mr. Adom said the Assembly was committed to maintaining Ho’s reputation as the “Oxygen City of Ghana” and explained that he personally monitored sanitation conditions to ensure that environmental challenges were promptly addressed.
The High Commissioner congratulated the Ho Municipality on its “Oxygen City” reputation and commended the Assembly for its efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment. She said the visit was aimed at identifying similarities and comparative strengths between Ho and a suitable municipality in Namibia for a practical partnership.
Mrs. Nghituwamata said waste management presented a major opportunity for cooperation, stressing that waste should not only be removed from communities but transformed into an economic resource capable of creating jobs and generating income. She also proposed stronger links between businesses in Ho and Namibia through trade, investment, import and export opportunities and knowledge exchange.
The High Commissioner said the ultimate objective was to move beyond diplomatic agreements to the implementation of tangible projects that would deliver measurable benefits to both sides. She linked the proposed municipal partnership to broader African cooperation and economic integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), saying stronger links between African cities and municipalities could help countries leverage their respective strengths for economic growth.
The engagement is expected to lead to further discussions between the Ho Municipal Assembly and the Namibian High Commission to identify a suitable partner municipality in Namibia and develop specific programmes in agriculture, livestock, waste management, investment, trade and local economic development. Both sides expressed optimism that the proposed partnership would translate into concrete projects, knowledge exchange, job creation and stronger economic relations between Ho and Namibia.
