The Member of Parliament (MP) for Takoradi, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, has distributed free school trunks and mattresses to Junior High School (JHS) graduates in the constituency who are set to begin Senior High School (SHS).
The former Western Regional Minister also donated exercise books to basic school children in the area.
The donation, which took place at the Railway and Habour Electoral Area of the constituency, was aimed at easing the financial burden on parents as well as ensuring that the JHS graduates are well-prepared as they begin their boarding and day school journey.
The Takoradi Constituency Communication Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Emmanuel Avudor, also called ‘Efo De Commander’, noted that the initiative is one of the social intervention programmes of the MP.
He said the exercise was carried out under the MP’s Community Education Fund, also known as ‘Koby Community Education Fund’, established in 2009.
He explained that the distribution exercise also marked the launching of the initiative, which will take place in the 15 electoral areas within the constituency.
Mr. Avudor disclosed that apart from the Koby Community Education Fund, the MP has also initiated Kobby Entrepreneurship Fund, also called ‘Koby Loan’, Koby Healthcare Fund and Koby Youth Investment among others, all geared towards improving the living standards of the people.
He added that the MP has also established Talents and Sports agency, to help nurture and harness the talents of the youth in the constituency.
The Takoradi Constituency Chairman of the party, Justice Maxwell Acquah, also called ‘Chairman Basty’, noted that the donation was the first in the electoral area but not first in the constituency.
He indicated that the MP has done a lot to improve education in the constituency, including the construction of a computer laboratory to improve the teaching and learning of ICT, and the establishment of scholarship schemes.
The Takoradi MP, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, noted that education remains his number one priority.
He said the donation was a signal to the children that when they work hard and pass their examination, they will be rewarded.
Beneficiaries and their families expressed their heartfelt appreciation, noting that the support would help the students settle comfortably into their new schools.
They said it reaffirmed the MP’s dedication to promoting education and ensuring that no child misses out on opportunities due to a lack of basic resources.
