A-Plus Makes U-Turn On AG

Dr. Dominic Ayine, Kwame Asare Obeng aka A-Plus

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has apologised to the Attorney General and MP for Bolgatanga East, Dr. Dominic Ayine, following a public feud over a bribery allegation that sparked widespread public and media interest last week.

The uproar stemmed from a now-deleted Facebook post authored by A-Plus, in which he accused Dr. Ayine of attempting to bribe members of the Appointments Committee of Parliament with GH¢500,000. The post, which included inflammatory language and personal attacks, drew sharp criticism from the public and political commentators alike.

Among the harsh phrases used in the post, A-Plus referred to Dr. Ayine as an “old fool,” threatened to “reset [his] brain,” and labelled him a “stupid man.” The post provoked a swift backlash, with many urging the MP to adopt a more respectful tone befitting his role as a public servant.

This was after Dr. Ayine forcefully denied allegations of bribery and corruption as well as claims that he was a thief.

“I have never stolen before in my life and have never received a bribe in public office,” the Attorney General stated, adding, “All those who have dealt with me know this for a fact. The President would not have appointed me Attorney General if he had questions about my integrity.”

Dr. Ayine said he was shocked by the accusations, which he described as “palpable falsehoods” and “name-calling with no basis in fact.”

A-Plus After-Thought Apology

In a statement released via his verified Facebook page, A-Plus admitted to writing the contentious post and acknowledged that his language was inappropriate.

“Upon reflection, I acknowledge that the tone and choice of words I used were inappropriate. As a Member of Parliament, a younger colleague, and a junior in the House, I sincerely apologise to Hon. Dr. Ayine and to the general public. I believe I could have made my point in a more respectful and constructive manner,” he stated.

The MP further explained that his remarks were in response to a press conference where Dr. Ayine appeared to rely on a post from a fake Twitter account impersonating him (A-Plus). The impersonator’s tweet accused the Attorney General of being corrupt—a statement A-Plus firmly disavowed.

“I have never—at any point—accused the Hon. Attorney General, Dr. Ayine, of being corrupt or a thief,” A-Plus explained further and added, “That claim is false and misleading. The statements currently in circulation originated from a fraudulent Twitter (X) account impersonating me.”

The fake account, he said, used his name, photo, and even bore a verification badge—elements that made it difficult for the public to distinguish it from his real identity. A-Plus provided a link to the account and encouraged Ghanaians to refer to his official Facebook page for his verified and original comments on national issues.

On the alleged bribery attempt involving the National Service Authority (NSA), A-Plus also denied any connection to the matter, stating categorically that he has never received any payment or conducted business with the NSA.

He admitted only to helping a man who claimed he was wrongly accused, saying that as a media personality, he was approached to facilitate media engagements to clear the man’s name.

A-Plus noted that his willingness to help people tell their side of the story is consistent, citing similar support he offered to other political figures in the past, including the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, then as the Minority Leader.

“I do not believe there is anything wrong with supporting another individual to tell their side of a story—regardless of their political affiliation,” he said.

While reaffirming his apology, the Gomoa Central MP also reiterated his commitment to the national fight against corruption, describing it as a core pillar of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.

“It is imperative that we all engage in this effort with integrity, fairness, and mutual respect. Let us move forward in unity and sincerity, with the national interest and the welfare of the Ghanaian people as our ultimate guide,” A-Plus emphasised.
