The MCE launching the fund.
IN A BID to end open defaecation at Ashaiman, the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) in the Greater Accra Region in collaboration with UNICEF has set up a Sanitation Fund to enable landlords to get toilet facilities in their homes.
Landlords are expected to access the loan for the provision of household toilets in their homes without paying interest. They are supposed to spread and pay the loan later in installment.
The move is in line with President Akufo-Addo’s vision of making Greater Accra clean.
Speaking at the launch of the fund, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ashaiman, Mr. Albert Boakye Okyere, said the Assembly had given landlords who do not have household toilets up to 28th February, 2019, to access the fund and provide toilet in their homes.
He warned that the Assembly would prosecute landlords who fail to take advantage of the facility to help in addressing sanitation problems at Ashaiman.
“Since a year now that we launched the household toilet at even a much-reduced cost, the participation is still low. I conducted some research and noticed that the people don’t have the total capital to pay for it. As a result, we have decided to launch this fund to support every household to get toilet and pay later in installment,” he said.
The MCE advised all landlords to take advantage of the fund to get a toilet facility in their homes to improve sanitation situation in the municipality.
He expressed worry about the practice of open defaecation, declaring that the Assembly would ensure the project goes on smoothly.
