Over 80 executive members of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) have petitioned the TUC leadership about the suspension of their Regional Chairman, Sumaila Boakye.

According to them, the suspension of Mr. Boakye over alleged election violations leveled against him is part of a ganged-up plot orchestrated by some union members to denigrate the man who has contributed to the development of the Ashanti Regional GPRTU.

Sumaila Boakye, George Opoku Mensah, and Kwadwo Prepah, three regional officers, have been suspended by the GPRTU’s national executives for allegedly violating a court order by holding elections in the Bomfa Achiase branch.

According to a letter signed by Isaac Esua, National Deputy General Secretary, “it was resolved that the three (3) regional officers of the Ashanti Regional Secretariat be suspended; for further investigation to be conducted.”

“This is as a result of your refusal to restrain the union from disobeying court processes by conducting the Bomfa Achiase branch election when you were served with a writ to restrain,” the letter indicated.

The Ashanti Regional GPRTU members, on the other hand, want the national executives to rethink the punishments imposed on Mr. Sumaila Boakye.

They added that the suspension of their regional chairman has caused mixed feelings and concerns among all members of the Ashanti GPRTU of TUC.

The GPRTU members pleaded with the leadership of TUC to intervene to avert a possible demonstration.

According to him, the punishment looks to be excessive, not compensating for the alleged offense committed by the regional executives.

They also urged the national executives to allow the suspended officials to return to their roles in order to bring joy to the Ashanti Region, as the union is tense.
