Baby Thief Jailed 2 Years

The convict, Abdulai Zalia

A 27-year-old woman, Abdulai Zalia, has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by the Walewale District Court for stealing a one-year-old baby in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.

The convict stole the said baby in Walewale while the mother was asleep.

The father of the baby returned home and realised the baby was nowhere to be found in the house, and reported the case to the police.

He is said to have returned home late from watching a football match, and noticed the absence of the baby beside his sleeping wife.

The traumatised couple immediately reported the case of the missing baby to the police.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service acted swiftly, located the 13-month-old baby and arrested the suspected abductor, Abdulai Zalia, on the same day of the incident.

The convict was arrested on April 18, 2024, when police conducted a search for the missing baby.

She was charged with one count of stealing and subsequently arraigned before court yesterday. She pleaded guilty and was convicted on her own plea.

She told the court that she and her friend, Rahi, went to the house and stole the baby from her mother while she was asleep.

The convict was sentenced by the court presided over by His Worship Simon Kofi Bediako when she pleaded guilty to the charge.

Meanwhile, some residents have indicated that the convict is a mentally derailed person and has been involved in some theft incidents previously.
