Barclays Awards Scholarship To 11 Students

Managers of Barclays Tertiary Education Scholarship Awards have awarded scholarships worth GH¢110,000 to 11 needy but brilliant students of the Presbyterian University College (PUC).

The awardees, who were each given a laptop, would also receive between GH¢9,444 and GH¢11,333 for the year.

The money is intended help them pay their fees, hostel charges and other expenditure related to their academic work.

The recipients are Amo Aboagye, Acheampong Mavis Awukubea (both Level 400 students), Asare Kenneth, Gyimah Isaac Newman and Clement Asare Bernard, all level 300 students.

The rest are Nazah Kwame, Sefa William Wiafe, Gerald Antwi Bosiako and Bampoe Godwin also students in Level 200.

Godfrey Evans Quaidoo, Barclays Regional Manager for Eastern, Volta and Greater Accra Regions, who presented the awards at the Abetifi Campus on Friday, indicated that the Barclays Tertiary Education Scholarship (BTES) comes under the Barclays Shared Growth Agenda (BSGA).

According to him, the Shared Growth Agenda is based on three strategic pillars- education, skills development, entrepreneurship development, with greater focus on Small Medium Enterprises (SME) and financial inclusion to reach out to the unbanked in the community.

“Barclays, one of the country’s oldest financial institutions, is not only about investments but has a strong passion through its Shared Growth Agenda. It wants to be relevant in communities and cater for the welfare of its vulnerable members of society,” he remarked.

Stating the criteria for selection of applicants for the award of the scholarship, Amo Osei, Registrar of the University, disclosed that Barclays has decided to award 70% to students pursuing ICT, Pure Mathematics and Engineering courses, with emphasis on electrical engineering.

He added that the remaining 30 percent would be selected from students pursuing sciences and humanities.

“Besides the applicant having a distinguished track-record of academic achievements, he or she must also have leadership and collaborative skills,” he stated.

President of PUC, Prof Emmanuel Adow Obeng, commended Barclays Africa/Ghana for granting scholarships to students of the university.

He added that the scholarship would motivate students to take their studies seriously.
