The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed his condolences to the family of Javits Frimpong, the 15-year-old Ghanaian student who was shot dead in the Bronx, New York.

In a phone call with father of the deceased, Thomas Frimpong, Dr. Bawumia sympathised with him and urged him to find solace in God.

“My deepest condolences, it is so sad considering what happened to your son. I’m sad about what has just happened. I just want to say sorry and to also let you know that we are praying for you over your loss. I’m currently in Japan and will ensure that anytime I visit the US, I will pay a visit and express my condolences to you and the family,” he said.

Thomas Frimpong thanked Dr. Bawumia for his kind words and assured him that he would endeavour to stay strong.

Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong was fatally shot in the abdomen shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2026, near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont neighbourhood of the Bronx, while walking to school. He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The teenager had relocated to the United States about a year ago to join his father, Thomas Frimpong, 60, and was a 10th-grade student at DreamYard Preparatory School. He was a former student of Adisadel College in Cape Coast and had dreamed of becoming a doctor.

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the suspects are three teenagers, believed to be aged between 16 and 18, who were seen fleeing the scene in black clothing and surgical masks. Surveillance footage showed Frimpong being chased before he collapsed. No arrests had been made as of Monday, November 2.

His father has told investigators that his son had complained about being bullied at school and that two students had been suspended three days before the shooting.

Police say they have not yet established a link between the alleged bullying and the killing, and are investigating multiple motives, including bullying, robbery and mistaken identity.
