Explosion Kills 4 In Hamile

Four people, including two officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), have died following a suspected explosion along an unauthorised border route in Hamile, in the Upper West Region.

The two civilians and one Immigration officer were reportedly killed at the scene while a second officer, who was critically injured and taken to a local health facility, later died.

Sources said two young men from the town were allegedly attempting to smuggle explosives across the border on a motor tricycle.

Immigration officers on routine patrol reportedly spotted the tricycle travelling along an unauthorised route and signalled for the riders to stop, however, the civilians allegedly ignored the officers and sped away, prompting a pursuit.

The explosives on the tricycle reportedly detonated during the chase, killing the two civilians and officers at the scene.

Tension is rising in Hamile, where local youth have staged a protest demanding answers from authorities about the explosion.

Gunshots were reportedly fired to disperse the protesters, and some youths are said to have been injured by stray bullets.

Police and Ghana Armed Forces personnel have been deployed to the town to restore calm and maintain order.
