Bowie State University in Maryland welcomed Akwasidae USA 2026 on Saturday, August 30, marking the start of African Heritage Month with His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the 16th Asantehene, and Maryland Governor Wes Moore in attendance.
The sixth U.S. edition of the festival featured royal processions, drumming, dancing, and colourful displays of Asante flags and umbrellas. The event drew scores of Ghanaians, members of the African diaspora, and community leaders including Prince George’s County Executive Aisha N. Braveboy.
Organizers highlighted Asante artistry, culture and unity.
In a post on X, Governor Wes Moore said:
“Every sixth Sunday, Kumasi holds Akwasidae, a sacred Akan festival honouring ancestors, the king, and the Golden Stool that is believed to hold the soul of the Asante people.
I’m overjoyed to celebrate with His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the 16th King of the Asante Kingdom to begin African Heritage Month.”
