The Builsa South District Assembly in the Upper East Region has handed over scholarship packages to a total of 49 students from the district to pursue tertiary education in any part of the country.
The brilliant but needy students had financial support ranging from GH¢1000 to GH¢3000 from the National Scholarship Secretariat (NSS) aimed at easing their financial burdens while in school.
Speaking at a brief handover ceremony at Fumbisi, the Builsa South District Chief Executive, Daniel Kwame Gariba, said the assembly’s gesture to the needy students was in line with government’s decision to development more human resources for national development.
“Gone are the days when only people with connections and links to influential people and the scholarship secretariat got access to scholarship packages to aid their education. The assembly will work to ensure that all those who applied to the secretariat get what is due them,” Mr. Gariba noted.
Gloria Awen, a student nurse at the Navrongo Community Health Training College and a beneficiary of the scholarship, said the support came at a time she needed it most and was happy to be part of the few students selected.
Like the other beneficiaries, Ms. Awen said the support would go a long way to help her pay her fees and settle other pressing academic needs.
She has promised that she will accept posting to the Builsa South District after her training to serve the people of the area.
Some other beneficiaries said decentralizing the NSS was the best, considering the fact that some people could not apply or meet their appointment dates because of the distance from the NSS in Accra.
