Busia Lecture Today

All roads lead to the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) tomorrow for the commemoration of the transition of Dr. K.A. Busia, the celebrated academic and politician.

President Akufo-Addo is scheduled to shower tributes to the man considered an embodiment of local democracy his short spell at the helm of the country’s administration marked by verifiable testimonies.

Dr. K.A. Busia was Prime Minister in the Second Republic between 1969 and 1972 and was credited with a lot of development activities, especially in the rural parts of the country.

His Centre For Civic Education made important impact on the lives of Ghanaians, especially schoolchildren who were distributed gratis with the ‘Courtesy For Boys And Girls’, a publication whose objective was to instill the sense of discipline and etiquette in children.

The centrepiece of his administration was the rural parts of the country for which he created a department of rural development to champion this cause.

For the Ghanaian youth, many of who have but a scanty knowledge about Dr. Kwesi Abrefa Busia, today’s historical lessons to be learnt would prove highly valuable.

Today’s activity is the third remembrance function which is being held in his honour. It would seem, however, that with President Akufo-Addo speaking at the event as Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces and the more elaborate programme stands this apart from the others.

As first an academic and secondly a politician, he noticed the creeping corruption in the Ghanaian society more than four decades ago and remarked lamentably about the cankerworm.

The celebration of his life today would draw a lot of people from both academia and the political fronts of the Ghanaian society.

His junior is Madam Amma Busia, an elder of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Dr. Busia came to power on the ticket of the Progress Party (PP) which has mutated to the NPP today.
