Cable Thief Dies

The young man who got electrocuted and burnt while attempting to steel a cable at the Bulk Supply Point (BSP) at Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality has died.

Eric Kofi Quaye, aged 32, died at about 2:15pm while receiving treatment at the Ketu South Municipal Hospital on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.

The suspect had been rushed to the facility that morning after he sustained severe burns from his head to his toe.

The BSP in question is specifically located along the Diamond Cement road in Aflao. It has two sections managed by ECG on one side and GRIDCO on the other.

Confirming the incident to Daily Guide, the Public Relations Officer of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Volta/Oti, Benjamin Antwi said despite the urgent care given to the suspect, he could not survive.

Eric Quaye had gone to steal cable at about about 5:20am on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 when he got injured.

He tampered with the Incomer cable with the aim to cut and steal it, but unfortunately got electrocuted and burnt. This was followed by disruptions in power supply to thousands of residents who depend on the BSP for electricity.

The entire supply enclave of the BSP went off as a result of the theft attempt. They are, Denu, Aflao, Dzodze, parts of Keta, parts of Akatsi, Dzodze, Adina, Agbozume, Nogokpo and Ave Towns.

After a hours of repair works, power was restored to the affected communities at about 10:00am.

The incident was reported to the Aflao police. However, due to the condition of the suspect, he was sent to the Ketu South Municipal Hospital for treatment.

He gave up the ghost at about 2:15pm, eight and half hours after the sustaining the injuries.
