‘Cameroon Shame, The Worst After May 9 Disaster’

Herbert Mensah

Former Asante Kotoko CEO, Herbert Mensah has described Black Stars’ recent AFCON shambolic performance as the worst to have happened to Ghana after the May 9 Disaster.

A little over a decade ago, the country’s football fraternity suffered shipwreck, where about 130 persons lost their lives in a midweek football game involving rivals Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko in Accra.

The horrible incident entered into Ghana and Africa’s football history as the darkest spot.

And to Mensah, who is also the Ghana Rugby Union president, the Black Stars disastrous performance in Cameroon that brought shame to Ghana could be equated to the unfortunate May 9 incident.

He made the statement when Asante Kotoko CEO, Nana Yaw Amponsah called on him recently in Accra.

He said “…in fact Black Stars’ performance in Cameroon is the worst in Ghana’s football history after May 9. This may sound political but it a fact.”

Ghana exited from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon failing to win a game and with just a point.

The Cameroon disaster has since attracted heated debate in Parliament, which has eventually resulted in the sacking of expatriate coach Milovan Rajevac.
