Church Building Collapse: 8 Trapped, Two In Hospital

The collapsed church building

Panic gripped residents of Klagon, near Lashibi in the Greater Accra Region, after pillars of a church building belonging to Breaking Yoke Ministry collapsed on workers on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

According to reports, about eight people were unloading cement at the construction site when the pillars and scaffolding gave way, trapping them under the debris.

At the time of filing this report, two of the victims were reportedly rushed to the hospital with injuries, while fears remain that others may still be trapped under the rubble.

Footage shared on social media by blogger Sammy Kay Media shows structural formwork, wooden scaffolding and wire mesh collapsed near the roofline of the multi-storey structure, with exposed iron rods jutting out. A crowd of onlookers had gathered at the scene.

Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were at the site to assess the situation and undertake rescue operations. Residents believe more people are trapped and need urgent help.

The incident occurred at about 7:00 p.m. Eyewitnesses at the scene said the victims were engaged in offloading cement when the structure came down.

Authorities are yet to confirm the exact cause of the collapse.

In March this year, an uncompleted three-storey / four-storey structure within the premises of the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School which was being used as a makeshift church for a congregation collapsed around 5:01 p.m. after heavy rainfall.

A total of 23 people were inside the building at the time of collapse, three people were subsequently confirmed dead, made up of two women and one man.

The 20 others were rescued alive and sent to various hospitals for treatment. Most were women and children.

Residents said the building had been left unfinished for several years and had long been considered unsafe with visible defects. Eyewitnesses described it as poorly constructed with no major maintenance since construction started in 2011.

It was originally meant to serve as a school facility but was abandoned due to safety concerns and later converted to a church. Authorities said investigations were underway.
