The Convention People’s Party (CPP) and its 2016 presidential candidate, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, have thrown their weights behind the termination of the Power Distribution Services (PDS) concession deal.
According to the CPP, the instant case of the PDS is simply a symptom of losing our sovereignty. Government cancelled the PDS power concession following a purported detection of breeches.
The party made the comments in a statement signed by its acting General Secretary, James Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr.
“It is abundantly clear from the letter under the hand of the Finance Minister that while the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government has mustered some courage to purport to ‘cancel’ the PDS deal, they are timid to renegotiate the whole Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) compact on the energy sector to insist on ECG operating as a state asset without private sector involvement,” the statement said.
The CPP while applauding the government for the ‘intent’ to cancel the PDS deal, as well as the vigilance demonstrated by civil society, the media and other political actors, called on the government to indeed listen and cancel the stinking deal.
Reclaim Ghana
The 2016 flag bearer of the CPP, in an interview with DAILY GUIDE, stated that the PDS saga ‘is a true policy crisis’ which, beyond threat and disappointment, provides an opportunity for rethinking the fundamental economic direction of the country.
He argued that it is an opportunity to “Reclaim Ghana” based on a strategic mobilisation of the Ghanaian spirit and all its competitive advantages.
Mr. Greenstreet said Ghana should focus on the quality as well as the gross sum of economic growth.
Continuing, he said East Asia, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries had various forms of state-led intervention policy directions that had been applied in different ways to suit their individual circumstances.
He indicated that he has accepted the President’s invitation to assume active citizenship seriously. “I have already begun a process of strategic conversations, strategic scenarios, strategic solutions and strategic planning towards contributing to the thought bank for acquisition of the features of a winning nation. The time has come for us to critically discuss the meaning of our political as well as economic citizenship seriously,” he said.
