Creative entrepreneur, Dapper Jayden, has raised alarm over what he describes as a new trend of mobile money (MoMo) fraud involving unsuspecting customers.
According to the Curator of Ghana Menswear Week, the incident occurred on Tuesday around 10:20 a.m. when he visited a MoMo vendor to make a cash withdrawal. Narrating his ordeal, Dapper Jayden said he followed the usual procedure, allowed cash out and entered his PIN to approve the transaction, only for his money to be deducted without the vendor receiving it.
He explained that the prompt which came for approval was from a platform called “PawaPay,” which the vendor later claimed was not his company.
“I was a victim of what appears to be a new MoMo fraud scheme. Today around 10:20 a.m. I went to an MTN MoMo vendor to withdraw some cash. I went through the usual process, the vendor initiated a withdrawal prompt after I had allowed cash out, I entered my PIN and approved the transaction and the prompt came from a platform called PawaPay.
“It was only after I had approved the transaction that the vendor claimed it wasn’t his company and that he hadn’t received the money. So just like that my money’s gone,” he recounted.
Dapper Jayden said he has since filed a formal complaint at the MTN branch at Achimota Mall with the branch head, Madam Lilian, and has been told to expect feedback within 78 hours. “This is deeply disturbing @MTNGhana what is going on?” he quizzed.
He is calling on MTN Ghana to investigate the matter and clarify how such transactions are able to go through without the vendor’s knowledge.
