The national divisions of both Junior and senior staff unions of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have reignited their campaign against the government’s intended privatisation of the company.
Information available to Daily Guide Online indicates that members of the joint unions have been directed to wear red armbands to work as the first phase of a series of actions.
The directive takes effect on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, following an earlier decision by the National Executives Council (NEC) to approve a series of actions aimed at protesting the proposed privatisation.
Under the first phase of the campaign, all members have been instructed to wear red armbands to work until next week, when the unions are expected to announce their next course of action.
The unions have also directed all branches to replace old red flags at their operational areas with new and larger flags bearing clear messages explaining the reason for their display.
The measures are intended to publicly demonstrate the unions’ opposition to the planned privatisation of ECG.
Despite the protest, members of the unions have been instructed to continue with their normal duties while wearing the red armbands.
Branch executives have subsequently been tasked with ensuring that all members comply with the directive as the unions prepare for further actions in the coming days.
