CONVICT! Baba Alhassan
A 19-year-old farm labourer has been sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment with hard labour by the Nsuta Circuit Court in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region for stealing a tricycle.
The convict, Baba Alhassan, a resident of Mampong, pleaded guilty to the charge. He was convicted on his own plea by the presiding judge, His Lordship Simon Nketiah Gagah, on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
The court further directed the prosecution to release the recovered tricycle to its rightful owner after it was traced and retrieved through a tracking device installed on the vehicle.
Two alleged accomplices, identified only as Jalilu and Kwaku, are currently on the run, with police pursuing them for their alleged roles in the theft.
Presenting the facts, Detective Chief Inspector Peter Kantoreje told the court that the complainant, Asare Bismark, 22, a tricycle rider residing at Adweeho in Mampong, parked his red tricycle with registration number M-26-AP 347 behind his house at about 11:45 p.m. on June 24, 2026, after returning home.
He said the complainant woke up the following morning only to discover that the tricycle had been stolen. He immediately informed the owner of the vehicle, who activated its tracking device.
The tracking system led them to Deema, near Takyimantia in the Ahafo Region, where the tricycle was found parked by the roadside.
According to the prosecution, the complainant and the owner mounted surveillance at the location. Moments later, Baba Alhassan arrived and attempted to ride away with the tricycle but was immediately arrested.
He was escorted together with the recovered tricycle to the Takyimantia Police Station before being transferred under police escort to the Mampong Police Station for further investigations.
During investigations, Baba Alhassan admitted the offence in his cautioned statement and confessed that he committed the crime with two accomplices, Jalilu and Kwaku, who remain at large.
He further disclosed that the tricycle was stolen at about 3:00 a.m. on June 25, 2026.
Based on his plea of guilty and the evidence presented by the prosecution, the court convicted Baba Alhassan and sentenced him to 18 months’ imprisonment with hard labour, while police continue efforts to arrest the two fugitives.
