Ayishetu Akwetey
A fetish priestess-designate, Ayishetu Akwetey, has escaped confinement, which was necessary for the rituals leading up to her installation as the fetish priestess of Old Ningo.
According to Asafoatse Akwetey Adela V, head of the family of Lowekponor Adela We of Old Ningo, the event may spell doom for the family, throwing the entire Old Ningo community and Madina into a state of confusion.
He mentioned that the late Doku Akwetey was the fetish priest of the family and community before his demise, and his daughter Ayishetu, was billed to succeed him. However, she managed to escape confinement, which was a necessary ritual.
“She is very stubborn, and we know how to handle stubborn people so it will serve as a deterrence. She claims to be a Muslim so she cannot become a fetish priestess. But this is your tradition; this is your root. You are only being called upon to be an intermediary between humans and the gods!” he lamented.
Sources close to the family explained that Ayishetu’s actions were unheard of in the history of the area, and the consequences of her actions could be dire.
At the time of filing this story, the whereabouts of Ayishetu was unknown. However, Farida Issaka, who described herself as a friend to the escapee, said the latter was subjected to inhuman treatment.
“I do not know where she is at the moment, but she called me on the night she escaped. She told me that they stripped her naked and applied all sorts of concoctions on her, among others, which were against her faith,” Farida added.
