Five trotro drivers are currently in the grips of the Anyaa-Sowutuom Police cells in Accra for rioting during the sit-down strike by commercial transport operators nationwide over the rising cost of fuel.
The drivers who will be put before court today (Tuesday) were arrested when chanting, singing, and moving from one end of the road at Ga Central Municipality to the other, causing vehicular traffic.
The MCE for Ga Central, Mohammed Bashiru Bambara, who spoke to Citi News, said the arrest was to deter others from causing mayhem.
He explained that they were arrested for destroying properties, which is a criminal offense.
The drivers particularly in the Greater Accra Region, earlier on Monday, December 5, 2021, began a sit-down strike that left thousands of commuters stranded at various bus terminals.
The strike was to protest the high cost of fuel prices in the country. They later suspended the strike.
