John Mahama
A Concerned Ga Dangbe group has given former President John Mahama a one-week ultimatum to render apologies to the people of Accra or face their wrath for a negative remark he made about Gas during a political engagement in Ablekuma South Constituency in Accra a fortnight ago.
During a press conference yesterday in Accra, the Concerned Ga-Dangme Youth of Chorkor described the remark as insulting and unfortunate, coming from a former President.
The former President during his campaign trail recently said the Gas are more concerned about their main food, kenkey and fish, and do not have anything to do with digitisation.
The remark attracted the wrath of some Gas, but the press conference yesterday by the Concerned Ga-Dangbe Youth of Chorkor was the first of its kind since the former President made the remark.
The concerned persons took exception to the implication of the remark, which according to them, implied that the Gas are more concerned about their stomachs than issues about development.
According to them, “this is a blatant insult which must be condemned by all Ghanaians.”
During the press conference, the concerned persons recalled how at a rally in the Ablekuma South Constituency of the Greater Accra Region, former President Mahama said the people of Accra did not care about digitisation but rather kenkey, pepper and fried fish.
“Is it digitisation kenkey we are going to eat? As for us ours is kenkey, shito and fried fish. Once we get it, we are satisfied,” he is quoted as saying.
The spokesperson for the group, Mr. Daniel Tetteh, said it was regrettable that after enjoying the support of the Gas over the years the former President would pass such a negative remark.
Mr. Tetteh asked rather rhetorically what informed the thoughts of the former President about the Gas and the offensive conclusion.
The former President, he went on, should rather tell the Gas what vision he has for them in his party’s manifesto rather that passing such offensive remarks.
The group also expressed their disappointment with chiefs in the region and questioned why they had been quiet over the blatant insults on their very existence.
Earlier, in the aftermath of the launch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Manifesto, the former President described the document as useless as the Ewe staple food, akple.
