THE MINISTRY of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA), as of July 14, 2025, transferred a total amount of GH¢23,621,000, representing allowances for April and May, to all assembly members.

This development was made known by the sector minister, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, in a press statement, stressing that out of the 9,085 assembly members, each is being paid GH¢1,300 per month to enable them perform their duties effectively and efficiently.

Mr. Ibrahim said this is in fulfillment of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s manifesto pledge to enhance their capacities and equip the assembly members with financial resources as well as logistics to deepen monitoring of all government projects and programmes being implemented within their electoral areas.

He said the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs on June 12, 2025, requested the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to release GH¢100,000,000 to enable it to transfer the funds to all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for the payment of the monthly consolidated allowances.

“Consequently, the Ministry of Finance released Twenty-Five Million Ghana Cedis (GH¢25,000,000) on June 18, 2025, as the first tranche of the allotted funds to the Ministry of Education, which as of today, Monday, July 14, 2025 has transferred a total amount of Twenty-Three Million, Six Hundred and Twenty-One Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢23,621,000), representing allowances for April and May, to all Assembly Members,” he disclosed.

Ahmed Ibrahim added that resetting Ghana’s agenda on local governance and decentralisation bodes well with this significant step in transferring resources to local governments and assembly members. “We shall continue to deliver and ensure adequate transfer of resources and logistics to the MMDAs to facilitate effective and efficient service delivery to the people,” he added.
