Gunmen kidnap 140 students in Nigeria

Dozens of students have allegedly been kidnapped in Nigeria.

An unnamed school official is reported to have told Agence France-Presse news agency that the number of students abducted was 140.

The students were reportedly abducted from a school in Kaduna, a provincial capital in northwest Nigeria.

The kidnapping took place on Monday, July 5, 2021, according to reports.

“The kidnappers took away 140 students, only 25 students escaped. We still have no idea where the students were taken,” according to Emmanuel Paul, a teacher at the Bethel Baptist High School in Kaduna state where the kidnapping happened.

Reports say the suspected gunmen scaled a fence to break into the school in the early hours of Monday morning, kidnapping most of the 165 pupils boarding there.

The Kaduna state police spokesman, Mohammed Jalige, is believed to have confirmed to AFP that the attack took place early Monday morning.
