At least three people have been shot dead with about seven others injured at Bimbilla in the Nanumba North District of the Northern Region by some unknown gunmen.
The attack has been linked to the protracted chieftaincy dispute in the area.
The deceased persons included Fusheini Issahaku, 35; Abdul Bassist Osman, 28, and Salifu Razak, 35.
The injured victims have been sent to the Bimbilla government hospital and Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) for treatment, with some of the victims said to be in life-threatening conditions.
The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Superintend of Police (ASP) Mr. Mohammed Yussif Tanko, who confirmed the incident said on Thursday, December 11, 2018, at about 9.20pm, two unidentified armed men on a motor made a brief stop at the centre of the Bimbilla town near the hospital junction and opened fire on a group of people who had gathered there and sped off.
According to him, 10 persons sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Bimbilla government hospital for treatment, adding that, the three were pronounced dead on arrival.
ASP Tanko said the five who sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were referred to Tamale Teaching hospital included Mohammed Alabani, 60; Mohammed Shani, 46; Fusheni Mohammed Gadafi, 35; Mohammed Yahaya, 25, and Iddrisu Alimiyaw 28.
He also said three of the victims, including Adam Yakubu, 30, and Ibrahim Musah are currently on admission at the Bimbilla government hospital.
Background
In February 2017, gunfire exchanges between the two royal gates in Bimbilla claimed the lives of 10 people, mostly women, and children. Bimbilla is currently under a curfew.
ASP Tanko said Police/Military patrols have been intensified to prevent reoccurrence of the development as the area is unpredictable.
