Hypocrisy & Contradictions

We live in a country where contradictions and hypocrisy have a sway in her affairs, the reason we appear not to be getting many things right.

The hypocrites are so noisy and with the support of social media and willing media houses they are able to get away with many things. Not for long anyway because truth shall always triumph no matter how long.

In all of the foregone, the rulers who seek to drive the ship of state in the right direction are faced with self-created challenges which retard progress, not forgetting the politicisation of  which is responsible for a chunk of the challenges as alluded to in a preceding paragraph.

Taxes are difficult to assemble for major development efforts, the doors available for the avoidance of such payments to the state not in short supply.

The E-Levy was shot down by a deliberate and planned project from the opposition quarter.

The vendors can pop champagne if they have not done so already as they collect commissions from us although they are collecting same from the telecos.

Today, don’t we pay charges for airtime transfers to vendors without complaining although the telcos have asked for a cessation of same?

It appears Ghanaians including intellectuals and the well-to-do want government to shoulder every responsibility.

In the jurisdictions we love to run to in search of greener pastures, we realise soon upon arrival that the citizens there do not joke with their responsibilities. They are therefore bold to demand accountability from duty bearers.

In our local jurisdiction, we do not only refuse to pay our taxes, we demand all services from the state gratis.

The polluter pays policy does not work here. Look at what our irresponsible behaviour has done to the Odaw River in Accra. Every year when the rains beckon, so much is withdrawn from the state coffers for the desilting of the choked river.

Our attitudinal shortcoming has made it increasingly difficult for us to succeed in the fight against galamsey.

Another malaise we face is our inability to speak the truth not only to power but to everybody who goofs in whatever form.

The politicisation of everything has worsened an already bad situation.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have served notice that should they find themselves in power as they said in 2020, they would allow illegal miners, their pollution of water bodies notwithstanding, to continue to ply their trade.

For those serving time in prison they have promised them freedom. That is the kind of a country we live in.

Even partaking in the process of approving the President’s nominee for Chief Justice is being politicised by the opposition NDC.

Pushing our rights to the very extreme and ignoring our responsibilities and obligations to the state cannot be a mark of good citizenship.
