I Don’t See How TV Rights Killed Movie Industry – Kisa Gbekle

Actress Kisa Gbekle has raised an objection to claims that Ghana’s movie industry has supposedly “collapsed” because young producers have been giving movie rights to TV stations.

According to her, she does not understand how that is possible.

The Director of Creative Arts Council and National Commission on Culture, Socrates Sarfo, who made the claim, was quoted for saying younger producers “sending movies to TV stations to air and not showing them in cinemas collapsed the industry.”

He explained that the advice given to the young crop of movie producers were not adhered to because they thought the more experienced ones are greedy and selfish.

Kisa responded in an interview with NEWS-ONE, saying, “But most movies go to the cinema before showing on TVs. The ones that are not qualified for the cinema standard are the ones that sometimes may go to TV straight.”

“Some producers just produce for the Nigerian market because that’s where the producers get paid more. After the Nigerian market like Iroko or Dstv’s which pays us, we then decide to give to the stations here. We sell at a small amount not for free. So selling TV right is not the reason for a shaky movie industry. Please!” she added.

Kisa started her career as a musician but ended up acting. On top of the list of her movies she has featured in are ‘The Miser’, ‘Accra Runs’, ‘Accra Hustlers’, ‘Stand By Me’, ‘8PM’ and others. She recently produced a movie titled ‘Thank God It’s Friday’.

She is now pursuing a career in the TV production industry with the new show.
