Music sensation, Black Sherif, has refuted claims that he advocated for the ban of foreign music in Ghana, during the unveiling of the ‘Play Ghana’ initiative at the Ministry of Information.
The award-winning artist clarified that his emphasis was on encouraging DJs and the media to spotlight local tunes, aiming to showcase Ghanaian culture, and amplify the nation’s music on a global scale.
He reiterated that he never suggested the prohibition of foreign music in Ghana, pointing out the paradox of such a stance given his collaborations with foreign music producers and artists. Dismissing reports of his alleged call for foreign music ban, he urged the public to disregard such claims, and questioned the interpretation of his message.
Black Sherif took to his social media to respond to criticisms, stating, “How do I want foreign music banned in my country while I work with foreign producers and artists? But agenda set ah lie? Good luck to everybody.”
During the initiative launch, he called for collective efforts to boost the visibility of Ghanaian music globally, emphasising that it wasn’t about blaming DJs, artists, or consumers but rather a positive step for the entire industry and culture.
While some members of the public misinterpreted his remarks as advocating for a foreign music ban, the ‘Play Ghana’ initiative aims to unite artists, DJs, and the public in a collaborative effort to elevate Ghanaian music for international recognition.
